I am pouring a 16 by 8 concrete slab. It is the front porch on our ranch house. The porch is covered by the roof overhanging, the old porch had voids underneath and was sinking in the middle. I have jack hammered out the porch and the backfill had settled underneath. It has one colum on the end of the porch. The colum is not really holding much weight, it can be taken out ( it has even blown down in as storm before ). Do I need a pier where the colum will be? Or just pour the corner thicker. The corner that was taken out had no pier and didn't seem to settle. The concrete at the corner was about a foot thick. I am tying 1/2 inch rebar on two foot centers. The only thing that the old porch had was rebar coming from the foundation every 3 feet and sticking into the pad about 4 feet.
